The changing face of the Renewable Energy industry
Posted by: Richard Musi
Our blog on the 10th September talked about the future of solar cells, and it seems that in general the future is bright for the entire renewable energy industry, with a succession of powerful companies turning their attention to the sector.
Richard Branson's Virgin Group have launched a £214m investment fund to be spread across renewable energy initiatives over the next the three years. Nanosolar have revealed their new, record-breaking solar panels which they claim 'will be printed out like newspaper'. Google has once again shown how versatile it is by diversifying into the renewable energy market, with announcements of their solar technology that will reduce costs by 60%.
Google is also interested in solar powered wind turbines, and their aim is to create a renewable energy which be cheaper to produce than coal. The only way that renewable energies are going to enter into the mass market is when their cost of production falls below that of fossil fuels. As long as fossil fuels exist and they are cheaper than renewable energy, regardless of how much pollution they produce, people will continue to use them until they run out. Hopefully therefore companies such as Google will ensure that in the near future, fossils fuels will be so expensive relative to renewables that no-one will even consider using them.
