ROPATEC Big Star VAWT

ROPATEC Big Star VAWT

The larger end of the vertical wind turbines, the Big Star even weighs in at a hefty 3.3 tonnes. The Ropatec Big Star WindRotor is a three phase grid connected Vertical Axis Wind Turbine which can be either ground mounted on a steel mono pole or building mounted subject to a Structural Engineers report. Standard mast sizes are 5.5m, 11m and 15m, and, according to the manufacturer, the turbines expexted life is 20 - 25 years. The grease guns which lubricate the turbine's bearings will require replacement every 5 years.

Swept area

The Big Star has a blade diameter of 8.00 metres. This is all important when comparing wind turbines, since it directly relates to the amount of passing wind energy the turbine blades can intercept.

Big Star power output curve

The graph below shows the power produced (in watts) for the Big Star at different wind speeds, based on data supplied by the manufacturer.

The green line shows the actual output that the wind turbine achieves at the given wind speed, according to the manufacturers.

While these graphs give an indication of the instantaneous power and efficiencies you might expect from the Big Star turbine, working out annual power production is more complex.
